How to Reduce Costs for Professional Packing Services
Our customers have frequently reported that packing (and unpacking, for that matter) is the absolute worst part of their move. It's overwhelming, time consuming, and it requires some skill when dealing with valuables.
It is for this reason that many people hire packing services in addition to movers. Hiring professional packing services can be tremendous help for those with tight schedules, strict moving deadlines, and for those who just need extra hands. As one of our customers once said:
"Once you hire packers, you never go back."
While professional packing is always the most convenient option, it may not always be the most budget-friendly one. If you would like the best of both worlds, we have compiled a list of tips and tricks to save money on packing services.
Our Expert Money Saving Tips
Provide your Own Packing Supplies
In our experience, the cost of packing supplies can add up very quickly. Instead of having your packers supply everything, you can try to outsource your own to save some money. Moving companies often buy their supplies in bulk from one source, which means they do not have the freedom to shop specific items by price. There are a few ways to save money by shopping your own supplies:
Get free moving boxes from liquor stores, local grocery and retail shops, or from neighbors who have recently moved.
Compare costs of items from local stores, Amazon, and other sites to find the best prices on supplies (tape, sharpies, boxes, scissors, packing paper, bubble wrap, etc.).
Rent (or buy) re-usable tubs in place of moving boxes.
Declutter Before Packers Arrive
Since most moving companies operate on hourly pay for packing services, the amount of items directly affects the total cost. If you would like to save money, try decluttering before services begin. This can include trashing items, donating unwanted furniture and belongings, or selling extra belongings to make space.
Organize Before Packers Arrive
The layout and organization of a home can have a surprisingly large impact on packing costs. Since professional packers prioritize packing organized and specifically labeled boxes, having a clean and orderly home will allow professional packers to pack faster and more efficiently. Junk drawers and misc. closets are usually more time consuming to pack due to the packer attempting to organize as they go. Clear pathways also allow packers to move quicker throughout the home.
Hire the right Number of Packers
The more packers you hire, the more intimidating the hourly price. However, hiring more packers will allow for your home to be packed significantly faster, saving costs in the long run. For example:
2 packers at $100 p/h | 2-bedroom home | 7-9 hrs. | $700-$900 total
4 packers at $200 p/h | 2-bedroom home | 3-4 hrs. | $600-$800 total
This will allow the packers to split up and pack the home strategically.
Choose Specific Room Only Packing
If you are looking for a budget-friendly option, you could opt to hire specific room packing rather than full-home services. The most common target areas and items that our clients have hired packing services for include:
The Kitchen and Pantry
Bathrooms
Display cases
Garage & Attic
Storage Shed
Office Spaces
Valuables, Antiques and Heirlooms
TVs
