Common Mistakes to Avoid when Hiring Movers

Updated: May 13

There are a few experiences in life that many people equally dread. Filing taxes, cleaning the fridge, unpacking after vacation, and most of all... searching for a moving company.

There are many things to consider while searching for the right moving company for you, including pricing, availability, and reliability. To help make your search a little easier, we’ve compiled a list of common red flags to watch out for.

  1. They quote you a really good price before asking any questions or seeing your items. Moving companies provide quotes based on moving distance, number of items, and the amount of labor required. If a company quotes you before asking any questions, it’s possible they may end up demanding more money during/after the job later due to “hidden fees” and “undiscussed circumstances”.

  2. The company refuses to provide a written estimate. It is advised to receive a written estimate for the price they gave you over the phone or in person. The estimate may change depending on the total hours it takes to move your home, but their pricing model on the estimate should stay the same. If they say they will move you for $150 per hour, their end quote should reflect the same hourly rate as in their quote. It is alarmingly common for some moving companies to change the hourly rate or to add bizarre fees once the final move is complete.

  3. The business owner defends bad reviews. It is important to see how movers respond to negative feedback. If the moving company consistently defends negative reviews, it may be advised to avoid that company. For example, if someone leaves a bad review due to several of their items being broken and the business owner simply responds with “accidents are unavoidable”, it may be best to go with a more caring company.

  4. All their photos are AI generated. If a moving company has tons of good reviews, but only AI generated photos, we’d recommend giving that company a deeper look before going with them. A lot of businesses are generating fake reviews to make themselves appear higher on search platforms. A real moving company will have real photos of the team members and of work being done.
